Morning: tide pools and Heisler Park
Pick the day by the tide table. Laguna Ocean Foundation provides free tide pool education at eight sites and lists the tide each one needs: 2.5 feet or lower for Goff Island, Heisler Park, Shaws Cove and Treasure Island, and 2 feet or lower for Wood’s Cove. If a low tide falls in the morning, start at Shaw’s Cove or Rockpile Beach. Stairs lead down from Cliff Drive, and the city advises waterproof shoes. The pools are part of a marine protected area, so look and take nothing. The tide pools guide has the rules.
Then walk Heisler Park. Visit Laguna Beach describes an oceanfront park along the bluffs on Cliff Drive from Aster Street to Divers Cove, with trails, gardens, picnic tables and restrooms. Park once on Cliff Drive. The city’s parking page lists enforcement from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., but its lot list gives 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the off-season through June 2027, so check the meter.
Midday: the Village and the galleries
Ride the free Coastal Route trolley or walk to the Village. On the city’s off-season schedule, it runs Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. See getting around for the full route.
Spend an hour or two in the galleries and shops. Laguna Art Museum at 307 Cliff Drive is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and has no lot of its own. The shopping guide names the districts. Zinc Cafe & Market, a downtown cafe and market at 350 Ocean Avenue, is listed below.
Afternoon: a trail or a beach
Choose one. For a trail, Top of the World is the ridge above town at the south end of West Ridge Trail in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, and the park’s map lists it among the best views. OC Parks sets day use from 7 a.m. to sunset. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park is open from 7 a.m. to sunset, with $3 parking, and OC Parks warns trails may stay closed three days or more after rain. Check hiking for routes.
For a beach, Main Beach is the largest in town, with a boardwalk and restrooms and showers at both ends. Visit Laguna Beach lists metered parking on Coast Highway, metered downtown lots and all-day paid parking at Lot 11. Read the parking guide before you drive down.
Sunset
Look up the day’s sunset time and be on a bluff or beach 30 minutes early. Sunset spots lists places that face the water. Heisler Park on Cliff Drive is a bluff-top park with views, and Top of the World is a ridge-top option, though the city says the open space beside Alta Laguna Park closes at sunset. For a table, Las Brisas and The Cliff Restaurant, below, both have ocean-view patios.
Where to eat along the way
Each name links to its page on the sister happy hour site. Zinc Cafe & Market is a downtown cafe and market. Las Brisas, a Mexican coastal restaurant at 361 Cliff Drive, has a patio that overlooks Main Beach to the south and the coastline toward Crescent Bay. The Cliff Restaurant, at 577 South Coast Highway, is an oceanfront restaurant with multi-level patio seating.
Parking and the trolley for the whole day
Pick one place to leave the car. Cliff Drive has meters near Heisler Park, downtown has metered lots and the all-day lot at Lot 11, and the city’s parking page lists meters and pay stations that take cards. If you arrive on a weekend outside summer, you can park at Lot 16 on Laguna Canyon Road for $5 and ride the free Canyon Route trolley downtown between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., then switch to the Coastal Route. The parking guide covers lots and enforcement hours.
How to adapt the plan
- Reverse it if the low tide falls late: Village and trail first, pools in the evening.
- On a wet day, swap the morning and afternoon for the rainy day guide.
- On a budget, the free things guide marks the stops that carry parking fees.
