Where to go

On the ridge

  • Alta Laguna Park City park with tennis and pickleball courts, a soccer field, a playground and restrooms.
  • West Ridge Trail OC Parks trail running north from the marked Top of the World point into Aliso and Wood Canyons.
  • Moulton Meadows Park City park with a hiking trailhead and access to a paved fire road that links Arch Beach Heights and Top of the World.

What Top of the World is

Top of the World is both a place name and a neighborhood. As a place to visit, it means the ridge above downtown Laguna Beach, where the city’s Alta Laguna Park sits and where OC Parks’ Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park reaches the edge of town. OC Parks labels its high point “Top of the World” at 1,036 feet and lists it among the park’s best views.

If you want the neighborhood’s streets and setting, read the Top of the World neighborhood page. This page covers the viewpoint and the trail.

Alta Laguna Park

The city lists Alta Laguna Park at 3300 Alta Laguna Drive. Its amenities are four tennis courts, six pickleball courts, a half basketball court, a playground, restrooms and a soccer field. The city lists no hiking trailhead for it. City parks close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and park restrooms are open from dawn to dusk. The city does not reserve or rent parks, so use is first come, first served.

Walking from the ridge into the wilderness park

OC Parks’ trail map for Aliso and Wood Canyons marks a public access gate at Top of the World. From there, West Ridge Trail runs north as an easy, multi-use trail of 2.5 miles. The map marks the trail dogs allowed, but the park’s rules page says no pets, so call the park at (949) 923-2200 before you bring a dog.

The city says the open space near Alta Laguna Park closes at sunset, and OC Parks gives the park’s hours as 7 a.m. to sunset, so plan to be back at your car before the sun goes down.

Rules from OC Parks’ park rules page apply once you are inside:

  • E-bikes are prohibited on unpaved trails.
  • The speed limit is 10 mph at all times.
  • Fires, smoking and alcohol are prohibited.
  • Stay on authorized trails, which the map says are marked with posts.
  • The park may close in rainy weather, and trails may stay shut for three days or more.

Getting there and parking

OC Parks’ trail map marks vehicle parking for the park only at the Alicia Parkway staging area, not at the ridge, so park where posted signs allow. If you only want the view, the sunset spots page lists lower viewpoints that stay open later. The free trolley and ride options are on the getting around page.

From Moulton Meadows Park

Moulton Meadows Park, at Balboa and Capistrano avenues, is a city park with a hiking trailhead and an adjoining paved fire road. The city says that road connects the Arch Beach Heights and Top of the World neighborhoods, and OC Parks lists the Moulton Meadows Park entrance among the park’s entrances. Check a map for the distance before you set out. The hiking guide lists the OC Parks trailheads.

Reading the map

OC Parks’ trail map for Aliso and Wood Canyons lists four high points as its best views: Aliso Peak at 683 feet, the top of Meadows Trail at 817 feet, the top of Moulton Peak at 890 feet and Top of the World at 1,036 feet. By that count the ridge at Alta Laguna is the highest of the four. The map shows West Ridge Trail running north along the ridge, and it marks only trails with posts as authorized. A path you see that has no post is not part of the park’s trail system.

Guided hikes to the ridge

The Laguna Canyon Foundation and OC Parks both list a Fitness Hike: Top of the World on November 12, 2026. The foundation’s page says its fitness hikes are not for beginners, at about a 19-minute mile pace, and that you RSVP on the event listing. Both listings start the hike at Canyon View, which OC Parks names as one of the park’s entrances. The hiking guide lists other guided hikes.

What OC Parks warns about

OC Parks calls the park a wilderness area and lists mountain lions, rattlesnakes, poison oak, extreme weather and rugged terrain among the hazards. It says your safety cannot be guaranteed. Wear footwear that suits a dirt trail and bring water. OC Parks also says trails may close for three days or more after rain, so check before you head up on a wet day.

Nearby

Laguna Coast Wilderness Park is OC Parks’ neighboring wilderness park. Lower down, Heisler Park offers a bluff-top view at sea level.
