Free things to do in Laguna Beach
Much of Laguna Beach costs nothing to enjoy: tide pools with educators, a marine mammal center, gallery nights, bluff paths and a trolley. Parking is where fees show up, so this page marks them.

Beaches and tide pools
The sand is the free part of a beach day. Parking is where the cost comes in. Main Beach parking carries a fee, the Wesley Drive garage serving Treasure Island charges, and Cliff Drive has meters above Heisler Park and Rockpile. At Shaw’s Cove, the Coastal Commission lists on-street parking. Read the parking guide for lots, enforcement hours and the Laguna Beach Parking App.
Laguna Ocean Foundation provides free tide pool education at eight sites, among them Heisler Park, Shaws Cove and Treasure Island, and its site gives the tide level each site needs. The pools are part of a marine protected area, so you look and take nothing. The tide pools guide has the rules.
Bluff paths and Heisler Park
Heisler Park stretches along Cliff Drive between Aster Street and Divers Cove, according to Visit Laguna Beach, which lists walking trails, gardens, picnic tables and restrooms. The Coastal Commission notes views from the bluff and paths down to the beach. The cost is the meter on Cliff Drive.
Trails
OC Parks charges $3 a day to park at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, at 18751 Laguna Canyon Road, and open hours run from 7 a.m. to sunset. The Nix Nature Center there runs free quarterly wildlife programs. Trails may close for three days or more after rain. See hiking for other routes, and check OC Parks for each trailhead’s fee.
Art for free
The First Thursdays Art Walk runs on the first Thursday of each month from 6 to 9 p.m. Visit Laguna Beach lists free admission to Laguna Art Museum that evening, and a free trolley that links the member galleries. The museum’s site lists the same free hours, posts special hours for some Art Walk nights, admits youth 19 and under free every day, and admits military members and their families free from Armed Forces Day through Labor Day. Otherwise adult admission is $15 as of October 2026. See the Art Walk page for the route.
Murals and sculpture stand in public places around town. Visit Laguna Beach counts more than 20 murals and over 100 pieces of public art, and lists mural addresses by area: eight on Laguna Canyon Road in The Hive, six downtown, five in a group it labels South Laguna and one at Alta Laguna Park. The public art page covers them.
Animals
The Pacific Marine Mammal Center on Laguna Canyon Road keeps its visitor yard open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. General admission is free and the center asks for donations. Reservations are encouraged but not required. Parking is free but limited. Read Pacific Marine Mammal Center for details.
The free trolley
The Coastal Route trolley runs along Coast Highway between North Laguna and Heisler Park, downtown, South Laguna and the Ritz-Carlton in Dana Point. The city’s off-season schedule runs from September 8, 2026 to June 25, 2027, and a trolley comes every 20 to 30 minutes. On weekends, the Canyon Route trolley runs downtown from Lot 16 at 1900 Laguna Canyon Road, where parking is $5. Hours are in getting around. The free ride makes the paid-parking problem smaller: park once and ride.
Beach rules that cost nothing to follow
City beaches open at 5 a.m. and close at 1 a.m., according to the city. Marine Safety asks you to swim near a lifeguard, notes that not every beach has a lifeguard at all times, and bans alcohol and smoking. Fires are prohibited at all Laguna beaches. Umbrellas are allowed, but larger shade coverings only in designated zones, which the city marks on maps of Main Beach and Aliso Beach. Leashed dogs are allowed at the beaches whose pages say so, with a summer window from June 15 to September 10 when they may come only before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. Check each beach page, since the city bans dogs at Thousand Steps Beach.
A free day in order
Start at the tide pools if the tide is low, walk the bluff at Heisler Park, ride the trolley downtown and spend the afternoon in the murals and galleries. On a first Thursday, finish at the museum from 6 to 9 p.m. The one day plan shows how the stops fit together.

- Wilderness park lot: $3 a day.
- Canyon Route park-and-ride: $5 at Lot 16 on weekends.
