What it’s like

Irvine Cove Beach lies below the bluffs of Irvine Cove, a guard-gated community at the north end of Laguna Beach. A rocky point splits the cove into a smaller northern beach and a larger southern one. A tunnel through the point is passable at the lowest tides. Most beach use happens on the southern section.

The city lists water sports, surfing, bodysurfing, skin and scuba diving and skimboarding as the popular activities. Surfers work the south end of the cove, and swimmers stay toward the middle. The city warns that major rip currents can develop. Abalone Point, the city’s northern limit, lies northwest of the cove.

The homes above the beach are custom houses with ocean views, including oceanfront and bluff-top estates. The community dates to the 1960s and has a gated entrance. See the Irvine Cove neighborhood page for the setting.

Getting there and parking

Land access to Irvine Cove Beach is for residents and their guests. The only way in runs through the private community, and the city’s page for the beach says so.

A 2002 Coastal Commission staff report describes the community as a private, locked-gate development between the sea and the first public road. The report says that location prevents public access to the cove beach at the base of the bluffs. It names Crescent Bay, down the coast, and Crystal Cove State Park, up the coast, as the nearest public access to the shore. Crescent Bay has a ramp and stairs from Cliff Drive, restrooms and outdoor showers. The report is more than 20 years old, so check current access before you plan a trip.

The city’s page for the cove adds that the Irvine Cove Homeowners Association governs the beach and that some beach policies and ordinances may differ from the city’s.

Rules and safety

Irvine Cove Beach lies inside the Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve. The reserve starts at Abalone Point, the northern city limit, and runs south to Goff Island. State rules make it unlawful to injure, damage, take or possess any living, geological or cultural marine resource, and fishing is not allowed. The city repeats both rules on its page for the cove and lists the beach as part of the marine protected area.

The city’s amenity list shows the marine protected area designation and nothing else. It lists no restrooms or showers for this beach.

Rip currents are the hazard the city names. It says major rips can develop at the cove. The southern end draws surfers, while swimmers stay toward the middle.

Good to know

Emerald Bay is the next gated community down the coast, and it lies outside the city limits. Its beach also has land access for residents and their guests only.

The Coastal Commission puts Irvine Cove at the north end of the City of Laguna Beach. The commission’s report places the community between Emerald Bay and the El Moro Cove mobile home park.
