What the park is
Laguna Coast Wilderness Park is a county park of 7,000 acres, part of the South Coast Wilderness that OC Parks puts at almost 20,000 acres. OC Parks’ map shows State Route 133, Laguna Canyon Road, running between it and Aliso and Wood Canyons. OC Parks lists hiking, mountain biking, trail running and horseback riding, and says the trails total about 40 miles. Amenities include picnic areas with tables and restrooms, a scenic overlook and the Nix Nature Center. For the neighborhood along the road, see Laguna Canyon.
Getting in and paying
The park entrance is at 18751 Laguna Canyon Road. OC Parks lists these hours and fees:
- Park: open daily 7 a.m. to sunset.
- Parking lot: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Parking: $3 a day as of October 2026. The machine accepts $1 bills and credit cards.

Staging areas
OC Parks’ trail map, revised November 2025, labels four staging areas. The park entrance sits at Little Sycamore Canyon, beside the nature center. The map also shows Dilley, Willow and Big Bend. OC Parks says equestrian parking is at Big Bend.
The map also shows public access gates on Laguna Canyon Road, Poplar Street and Dartmoor Street.
Reading the trail map
OC Parks marks every trail easy, moderate or difficult and either hiking only or multi-use. A few examples from the November 2025 map:
- Barbara’s Lake Trail: easy, 0.25 mile, hiking only.
- The Lake Trail: easy, 1 mile, hiking only.
- Big Bend Trail: difficult, 1.5 miles, multi-use.
- Emerald Canyon Road: moderate, 3 miles, multi-use.
- Bommer Ridge Trail: moderate, 3.75 miles, multi-use.
Multi-use trails are open to bikes, and most of them to horses as well. OC Parks says all authorized trails are marked with posts and the rules tell you to stay on them. The Laguna Canyon Foundation maintains 26 miles of singletrack here and in Aliso and Wood Canyons.
More trails on the map
The map rates these trails too:
- Laurel Canyon Trail: moderate, 1.5 miles, hiking only.
- Laurel Spur: moderate, 0.5 mile, multi-use.
- Upper Laurel: easy, 0.65 mile, multi-use.
- Willow Canyon Road: difficult, 1.5 miles, multi-use. It starts near the Willow Staging Area.
- Water Tank Trail: moderate, 1.5 miles, multi-use. Its lower end meets the Poplar Street gate.
- Serrano Ridge Trail: moderate, 4 miles, multi-use.
- Little Sycamore Canyon Trail: moderate, 1 mile, hiking only.
- Pacific Ridge Trail: drawn as an easy multi-use trail from the Ridge Park public access gate. The map’s trail table gives no length for it.
Boat Road, rated moderate at 1.3 miles and multi-use, has its own page: Boat Road Trail, with Laguna Bowl and Water Tank trails beside it.
Rules
OC Parks’ rules page says:
- No pets, though horses are exempt.
- No e-bikes or drones. The ban covers e-bike types 1 to 3.
- All fires are prohibited, and so is alcohol.
- No swimming or wading in the creeks or the lake, and no watercraft.
- No camping, according to the park FAQ.
- The park is subject to closure in rainy weather. The park page says trails may close for three days or more after rain.
The rules page also warns of mountain lions, rattlesnakes, poison oak and rugged terrain.
Guided programs
OC Parks says volunteer naturalists and park staff lead tours on foot and by bicycle, from fitness to botany. The Nix Nature Center runs free quarterly wildlife programs. As of October 27, 2026, OC Parks lists a Serrano Ridge explorers hike for October 28, a fitness hike on the Nix and Little Sycamore trails for October 29 and a bird walk for October 31. The Laguna Canyon Foundation also posts hikes that start at the nature center and the Willow Staging Area, with RSVP.
For routes in both OC Parks wilderness parks, the hiking guide compares them, and the biking page explains where bikes go and the e-bike rules.
Volunteering and trail days
The Laguna Canyon Foundation holds volunteer trail work days from October to June, according to its site, and sign-up is online. OC Parks’ event listings name places across the park, from Serrano Ridge and Little Sycamore to Ridge Park and Barbara’s Lake. OC Parks updated the trail map in November 2025, so use the copy on the park page.
