What it’s like

Bluebird Beach is a sandy stretch in front of the Surf & Sand Resort, about 1.1 miles south of Main Beach in a straight line. The city says the ramp down to it is at the corner of South Coast Highway and Bluebird Canyon.

The city describes a mostly sandy stretch with a strong shore break. Several small reefs at the southern end are popular with body boarders, and the city says swimmers should avoid them. The city’s Mountain Road page places the second major rip current south toward Bluebird Beach.

Mountain Road Beach lies to the north. To the south, the stairs at Agate Street and Pearl Street lead down to the same shoreline.

Getting there and parking

You reach Bluebird Beach by a ramp, not a street-end stairway. The city places it at the corner of South Coast Highway and Bluebird Canyon Drive. Orange County Coastkeeper’s directions for marine protected area monitors describe it as the ramp beside the Surf & Sand hotel, and they list the stairs at Pearl Street and Ocean Way as the other way onto this stretch of sand.

There is no public beach lot. The Coastal Commission lists on-street parking for the Anita Street to Pearl Street stretch. The Coastkeeper guide suggests Ocean Way for the Pearl Street stairs, or Glenneyre Street one block up the hill across Coast Highway. The city lists three-hour meters in some areas and very limited neighborhood parking in others. The city’s parking page lists enforcement from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., but its lot list gives 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the off-season through June 2027, so check the meter. The parking guide covers permits and the summer lots.

The free Coastal Route trolley runs along Coast Highway every 20 to 30 minutes in the off-season. The getting around guide has the schedule.

The Coastal Commission lists no public restrooms on this stretch. Public restrooms and showers are at the three beaches the city recommends: Main Beach, Treasure Island Beach and Crescent Bay Beach.

Rules and safety

Bluebird is part of the Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve, which runs from Abalone Point south to Goff Island. The city’s page for the beach asks you not to take, collect or disturb marine life, and it prohibits taking rocks and shells. Fishing is not allowed at this beach.

Swim near a lifeguard and with a buddy, the city advises; it adds that not every beach has a lifeguard at all times. Dogs on leash are allowed, but only before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. between June 15 and September 10.

Good to know

The city closes beaches from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. and bans alcohol, smoking and fires on them. Adults 21 and over are included in the alcohol ban.

Housing and live figures for the area sit on the Woods Cove page. Bluebird Canyon Drive climbs inland from the ramp into Bluebird Canyon.
