Weather in August
August is the warmest month in the NOAA normals for the Laguna Beach station: an average high of 81°F and an average low of 61°F. Visit Laguna Beach also names August the warmest month and says evenings carry a slight chill.
It is also the driest. The normal total is 0.02 inch, and the station averages no day in August with 0.10 inch or more. These are 1991–2020 averages, so treat them as the pattern and not a forecast.
Sunset moves earlier through the month. The U.S. Naval Observatory puts it at 7:51 p.m. on August 1 and 7:18 p.m. on August 31 in 2026, in Pacific Daylight Time. That is a half-hour shift in thirty days, which matters if you plan a late beach walk.
The ocean in August
August is the warm end of the ocean’s year. At NOAA’s San Pedro South buoy (station 46253) the water averages about 70°F in the 2015–2025 record, tied with September. The buoy is offshore in 66 meters of water, about 23 miles west of town, so it reads the season and not one cove.
For paddling and swimming, read the kayaking and paddleboarding and snorkeling and diving pages. The city’s advice applies on any beach: swim near a lifeguard and with a buddy, and remember that not every beach has a lifeguard at all times. The city also says it answers emergency calls every weekend from people hurt on the rocks, where waves can be unpredictable.
Standing beach rules: no alcohol, no smoking, no fires, and tents and umbrellas under 6 feet wide and tall. In summer, leashed dogs are allowed before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. until September 10.
What’s on in August
- Pageant of the Masters. Live people pose in re-creations of famous artworks, nightly in the summer run. The 2027 season ends August 28, and the Pageant’s theme is “Celebrations: The Joy of Art.” Doors open at 7:30 p.m., the curtain rises at 8:30 p.m. and the organizer puts the end at about 10:30 p.m.
- Festival of Arts art show. More than 100 Orange County artists show their work through August 27 in 2027, Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. and on weekends from 11 a.m., until 11:30 p.m.
- Sawdust Art Festival. The summer festival runs all summer, seven days a week, with work by Laguna Beach artists.
- Laguna Art-A-Fair. Its 2027 season runs through September 5, and Laguna Beach residents are always free.
- Music in the Park. The city’s free Sunday-evening concerts at Bluebird Park run in July and August, starting at 5 p.m.
- First Thursdays Art Walk. Galleries open to the public on the first Thursday of the month all year; see the Art Walk page and the art galleries list.
For the whole summer lineup in one place, see the events guide.
Crowds and getting around
August sits at the center of the city’s summer trolley season, which ran June 26 to September 7 in 2026. The Festival of Arts says summer is very busy and that parking can be tricky, and the city opens large lots around town for the season.
Evening events are why the late service matters. The Pageant ends about 10:30 p.m., and in 2026 the city’s Canyon Route from the Act V lot (Lot 16) ran until 11:30 p.m. Summer Breeze, the free park-and-ride from 16355 Laguna Canyon Road in Irvine, ran Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The Coastal Route ran 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily.
Details on lots, meters and permits are in the parking guide, and the getting around guide covers the routes and the on-demand service.
What to pack
- Sun hat and sunscreen. August has the highest average temperature of the year and almost no rain.
- A sweater for after sunset. Averages fall to 61°F overnight, and the evening chill is what Visit Laguna Beach tells guests to plan for.
- Reusable water bottle. Festival grounds and bluff paths mean long stretches outdoors.
- A beach chair that sits low. The city encourages low-seating chairs at its Bluebird Park concerts.
- A ticket plan for the Pageant. Doors open an hour before the 8:30 p.m. curtain.
