Memorial Day 2027

Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 31, 2027, the last Monday in May. A handful of city pages mention the holiday, and this page gathers them. The Fourth of July page and the Labor Day page cover the other two summer holidays.

What the city’s holiday tables say

Trash and recycling. The city’s holiday table lists no trash and recycling pickup on Memorial Day. Pickup slides one day later for the rest of that week, and the table lists no residential street sweeping. The table prints no year, so read the city’s holiday schedule before the weekend. The trash and recycling guide explains the carts and pickup days.

City Hall. The city’s 2026 calendar, which its City Hall Hours page links as the closure calendar, marks Memorial Day (May 25, 2026) with its holiday color. The city had not posted a 2027 calendar as of October 28, 2026. City Hall’s usual hours are Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., so call (949) 497-3311 before you plan on a Monday errand.

Trolley and Laguna Local. The city’s transit holiday table lists trolley service and Laguna Local on-demand service from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Memorial Day. The table prints no year, and a footnote says the hours are subject to change, so check the holiday schedule linked from the city’s trolley page before you ride. The city’s posted off-season Monday schedule is different: the Coastal Route runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Laguna Local from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The getting around guide explains both services.

Parking. The city’s parking page lists enforcement hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and its public lots page lists 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Neither names a holiday exception, so read the posted sign at your space. The parking guide covers lots, permits and the park-and-ride options.

Summer service starts later

Memorial Day is not the city’s start date for summer parking or the regular summer trolley routes. As of October 2026 the city’s parking page lists off-season parking through June 21, 2027, and its trolley and lots pages list the off-season through June 25, 2027. In 2026 the city’s summer trolley season ran June 26 to September 7.

The Summer Breeze park-and-ride is the earlier service. It is the free trolley loop from a lot at 16355 Laguna Canyon Road in Irvine to the art festivals and downtown. The city’s Summer Breeze page lists early service from May 22 to June 25 on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The page prints no year. A June 2026 capture of the trolley page shows the same dates for 2026, when May 22 was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. The city does not say it ties the start to the holiday, and it had not posted 2027 dates.

At the beach

Dog hours are the same as in spring. The city’s summer restrictions begin June 15, so leashed dogs are allowed on city beaches at any time of day on Memorial Day weekend. Dogs are never allowed at Thousand Steps Beach. The dog-friendly places guide lists other options.

The city says its lifeguards work every day of the year on the beach, the boardwalk and in the ocean. It also says not every beach has a lifeguard at all times. The pages read for this guide post no separate Memorial Day staffing, so call Marine Safety at (949) 497-0310 for current conditions, and see the ocean safety guide.

The other beach rules do not change for the holiday. The city prohibits alcohol on beaches even for adults 21 and older, smoking, fires, single-use plastic and balloons. It allows umbrellas only, except in designated canopy and easy-up zones, and it closes beaches north of Aliso Creek from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. The beach rules guide lists the rest.

Permit limits that start at Memorial Day weekend

Two city permit rules change with the season:

  • Beach weddings. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, the city permits beach weddings only at North Main Beach, Rockpile Beach, Picnic Beach and Divers Cove Beach. The beach weddings guide has the permit steps.
  • Filming and photography. Commercial film permits are not issued from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and professional still photo permits are limited to 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 6 p.m. to sunset. The filming and photography guide has the fees.

Ceremonies and events

This page lists no Memorial Day ceremony or event for 2027. As of October 28, 2026, no notice for May 31, 2027 from the city could be found, and the Chamber of Commerce calendar lists nothing from May 22 to 31, 2027. Check the city’s special events page closer to the date.

The summer festivals open in late June

The festivals open about four weeks after the holiday. Laguna Art-A-Fair lists June 25 to September 5, 2027. The Festival of Arts lists its Festival Art Show from June 28 to August 27 and the Pageant of the Masters from June 30 to August 28, 2027. The Sawdust Art Festival had not posted 2027 summer dates. The summer art festivals page compares them. The May guide covers weather and daylight, and the June guide covers the weeks that follow.
