Weather in February
For February, NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals at the Laguna Beach station show an average high of 68°F and an average low of 45°F. Both figures sit within a degree of January’s.
The rainfall figure is the one that stands out. The normal February total is 3.39 inches, the highest of all twelve months, and the station records an average of 5.3 days with at least 0.10 inch. A normal is an average of many Februaries, so any single year can land well above or below it.
The sun sets at 5:22 p.m. on February 1, 2027, and at 5:47 p.m. on February 28, per the U.S. Naval Observatory’s figures for Laguna Beach in Pacific Standard Time. Days gain about 25 minutes of evening light over the month.
Wet weather affects trail plans. OC Parks says Aliso and Wood Canyons trails may stay closed for three days or more after rain, so confirm before you drive to a trailhead. The rainy day guide lists what stays open indoors.
The ocean in February
As a guide to the water, NOAA’s San Pedro South buoy (station 46253) averaged about 59°F in February over 2015 to 2025. The buoy sits offshore, about 23 miles west of Laguna Beach, so its readings show the season and not the temperature at any one beach. The typical figure is 9 degrees below the average afternoon high on land.
Swimming and wading advice comes from the city’s Marine Safety division; the ocean safety guide summarizes it.
What’s on in February
- Laguna Beach Music Festival. The 25th edition runs February 2 to 7, 2027. Laguna Beach Live! and the Philharmonic Society of Orange County present it together. See performing arts in Laguna Beach for the other music and theater organizations.
- First Thursdays Art Walk. The walk is held on the first Thursday of every month, from 6 to 9 p.m. Over 40 galleries host receptions and demonstrations, and the Laguna Art Museum is free that evening. The Art Walk page has the route and trolley notes.
- Gray whales turn north. NOAA Fisheries says eastern North Pacific gray whales can be seen migrating north along the U.S. West Coast from mid-February to May. Visit Laguna Beach also points to February for the return trip north. The whale watching page covers shore lookouts and boat operators in Dana Point and Newport Beach.
The events guide lays out the full calendar by season. If you are planning around January’s schedule, see Laguna Beach in January; March brings a downtown parade, covered in Laguna Beach in March.
Crowds and getting around
The city’s off-season trolley schedule covers February. During it, the Canyon Route lets you park at Lot 16 (Act V, 1900 Laguna Canyon Road) for $5 and ride a free trolley downtown every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., every 30 minutes. The city says Lot 16 is closed to the public Monday through Friday, so this option works on weekends only.
For lots, meters and permits, read the parking guide and the getting around guide.
What to pack
- A waterproof jacket. February averages 5.3 days a month with at least 0.10 inch of rain.
- Layers for 45°F nights. The average low stays in the mid-40s.
- Waterproof shoes. The city recommends them for tide pools, where the rocks can be sharp.
- An evening plan. Sunset is before 5:50 p.m. every day, so dinner reservations and bluff walks shift earlier.
