Driving to Laguna Beach

Visit Laguna Beach describes three road options.

  • CA-133, Laguna Canyon Road. Visit Laguna Beach names the I-405 as the closest freeway and Highway 133 as the closest exit. From the north, it says to take the 405 or the 5 South and exit onto Highway 133 South. It says Highway 133 South turns into Laguna Canyon Road and then becomes Broadway.
  • Pacific Coast Highway, SR-1. Visit Laguna Beach calls it the scenic option, following the coastline, for travelers with extra time.
  • SR-73 toll road. Visit Laguna Beach lists it as the closest toll road. The Toll Roads, which runs State Routes 73, 133, 241 and 261, calls FasTrak the preferred way to pay and has an online portal for paying tolls.

Once you arrive, parking covers city lots, meters and permits, and getting around covers the free trolley.

Buses

OCTA’s Laguna Beach fact sheet, current to June 30, 2026, counts four bus routes serving 72 stops in the city. Two matter most to visitors:

  • Route 1 runs along Pacific Coast Highway from Long Beach to San Clemente. Its timetable, effective August 9, 2026, lists service to Laguna Beach High School, the Laguna Beach Civic Center, Monarch Bay and Mission Hospital, and it ends at the San Clemente Metrolink station.
  • Route 89 runs from Laguna Beach to Rancho Santa Margarita by way of Laguna Canyon Road, El Toro Road and Santa Margarita Parkway, with a connection point at the Laguna Hills Transportation Center. Its timetable is also effective August 9, 2026.

Visit Laguna Beach says OCTA buses stop at the Laguna Beach Bus Depot downtown. Check OCTA’s current timetables before you ride.

Trains

Amtrak lists two stations near Laguna Beach:

  • Irvine, 15215 Barranca Parkway, is 10.6 road miles from Main Beach.
  • San Juan Capistrano, 26701 Verdugo Street, is 13.6 road miles from Main Beach.
  • Metrolink. OCTA’s Route 1 timetable names the San Clemente Metrolink station, and Metrolink’s own station list places the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo station, 28200 Forbes Road, on its Orange County Line.

Metrolink’s station pages list both its Orange County Line and its Inland Empire-Orange County Line at Irvine and at San Juan Capistrano. They list OCTA buses as a connection at both stations, the Irvine CONNECT shuttle at Irvine, and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains through the Rail 2 Rail program for Metrolink monthly pass holders. OCTA’s Route 1 timetable ties the coast road to the rail line: the route runs through Laguna Beach on Pacific Coast Highway and ends at the San Clemente Metrolink station. For a day out from Los Angeles, the day trip from Los Angeles page covers the drive, the trains and the bus link.

Visitors Center

Visit Laguna Beach runs the official Visitors Center at 381 Forest Avenue. Its contact page lists the center as open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a phone line at (949) 497-9229, and its visitor center page says staff can help with parking and places to eat.

Once you are in town

The city runs a free Coastal Route trolley on Coast Highway, and on weekends the Canyon Route from Lot 16 for $5 parking, from September 8, 2026 to June 25, 2027. Laguna Local, the city’s free on-demand service, has expanded to Laguna Canyon Road and El Toro Road, where the city says residents can request rides to and from the art festivals, downtown or the Bus Depot. The city says a wheelchair accessible vehicle is available at all times and gives dispatch at (949) 497-0766. For the seasons when the trolley changes, see the best time to visit page.
