  • Laurel Spur Moderate, 0.5 mile, multi-use on the map.
  • Upper Laurel Easy, 0.65 mile, multi-use on the map.

What the trail is

OC Parks’ map of Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, revised in November 2025, lists Laurel Canyon Trail as a moderate trail of 1.5 miles. It carries the hiking-only icon, so bikes and horses are not allowed on it. The map draws it leaving the Willow Staging Area on Laguna Canyon Road and climbing the canyon to a junction with Laurel Spur, where Upper Laurel carries on. Park-wide details are on the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park page.

OC Parks describes the park’s canyons as lined with willow, oak and sycamore, while coastal sage scrub covers the slopes and hilltops. The Laguna Canyon Foundation’s listing for its guided loop adds views of rock formations in the canyon, the wider South Coast Wilderness and groves of sycamore and oak. For the longer map through the park, see the hiking guide.

Trailhead and parking

The Willow Staging Area is at 20070 Laguna Canyon Road, on the west side of State Route 133 just south of El Toro Road, according to the foundation. OC Parks’ map marks parking, restrooms and water there. Parking is $3 a day as of October 2026. OC Parks’ FAQ puts equestrian parking at the Big Bend staging area, farther south on the same road.

OC Parks’ map header gives day use as 7 a.m. to sunset and parking as 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It does not say which lots that covers, so call the park office at (949) 923-2235 if you expect to return late.

The trails around it

OC Parks’ trail guide rates its neighbors this way:

  • Laurel Canyon Trail: moderate, 1.5 miles, hiking only.
  • Laurel Spur: moderate, 0.5 mile, multi-use. The map shows it meeting Willow Canyon Road.
  • Upper Laurel: easy, 0.65 mile, multi-use.
  • Willow Canyon Road: difficult, 1.5 miles, multi-use, starting at the Willow Staging Area gate.

Multi-use trails are open to hikers, horse riders and bikers on OC Parks’ icons. The map says every authorized trail is marked with posts and all other trails are unauthorized, so match the post numbers on the map and stay on them.

Guided hikes

The Laguna Canyon Foundation lists two loops that use these canyons. Its Explorers Hike: Laurel Canyon Loop runs about 3.5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain and a 3 out of 5 difficulty rating. Its Let’s Go Hiking! listing describes 3.8 miles through Laurel and Willow canyons, with an ocean view at the top and rocky, uneven ground. Hiking poles are recommended. The Laurel Canyon Loop is for ages 12 and older and needs advance registration; check the foundation’s hikes calendar for upcoming dates.

Planning around rain

The Laguna Canyon Foundation says wet or muddy trail conditions and high temperatures may cancel its hikes, so check the foundation’s calendar for conditions. OC Parks says the park is subject to closure in rainy weather and that trails may stay closed three days or more after rain. Call (949) 923-2235 for conditions before you drive to the staging area, and read the park page for any closure notice.

Rules and conditions

OC Parks’ rules say:

  • No pets. Horses are exempt, though this trail is hiking only.
  • No e-bikes, including types 1 to 3, and no drones.
  • No fires, no picking or collecting and no intoxicants.
  • The park closes in rainy weather, and the park page says trails may close for three days or more after rain.

OC Parks warns of mountain lions, rattlesnakes, poison oak and rugged terrain. The foundation’s listing tells hikers to bring plenty of water, closed-toe shoes and sun protection.

Water in the canyon

Streams here depend on the season. OC Parks says the park’s ephemeral streams spring to life after a plentiful winter rain and the creek beds are seasonally dry in summer. Neither OC Parks nor the foundation describes a waterfall on this trail, so check conditions with the park office rather than plan a hike around one. For standing water, the Barbara’s Lake page covers the lake on OC Parks’ map.
