Where these trails are
Laguna Coast Wilderness Park is an OC Parks preserve of about 7,000 acres up Laguna Canyon. Its main entrance and nature center are at 18751 Laguna Canyon Road. Boat Road and its neighbors sit at the south end, close to the Laguna Beach side of the canyon, away from that entrance.
OC Parks’ map, revised November 2025, shows Boat Road, Water Tank Trail and Laguna Bowl Trail climbing from the park’s south edge to a cluster of numbered trail posts on the ridge. Laguna Ridge Trail leaves the same area toward Laguna Canyon Road. The map labels an elevation of 925 feet beside Laguna Bowl Trail and 700 feet near the lower part of Boat Road. A scenic overlook symbol sits beside Boat Road.
How OC Parks rates them
The trail guide on the map gives each trail a difficulty and a use type:
- Boat Road: moderate, 1.3 miles, multi-use with hiker, horse and bike symbols.
- Laguna Bowl Trail: difficult, 1.5 miles, multi-use with all three symbols.
- Water Tank Trail: moderate, 1.5 miles, multi-use with all three symbols.
- Laguna Ridge Trail: difficult, 1.25 miles, hikers and bikes only.
- Emerald Canyon Road: moderate, 3 miles, multi-use. Bommer Ridge Trail: moderate, 3.75 miles, multi-use.
Multi-use means you share the trail with bikes and, on most of these, horses. The mountain biking page lists the park’s other bike trails.
Getting to the trailheads
The map marks three public access gates along the south edge, labeled Dartmoor Street, Poplar Street and Laguna Canyon Road. It also marks a gate at the lower end of Emerald Canyon Road with the label “No Access.” The map shows parking only at staging areas, and the nearest is Big Bend, off Laguna Canyon Road. The map does not show parking at the street gates. Street parking in the neighborhoods follows the city’s rules, so see the parking guide before you leave a car.
Whichever way you enter, OC Parks marks every authorized trail with posts and tells you to stay on posted trails.
Hours, parking and fees
- Park: open daily, 7 a.m. to sunset.
- Parking lots: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., which ends well before sunset in summer. Ask the park what applies to a car left past 5 p.m.
- Parking: $3 a day as of October 2026. The machine takes $1 bills and credit cards.
- Park office: (949) 923-2235.
The map and park page list no access days or reservation rules for these trails. Confirm with the office if you have a specific plan.
Rules
OC Parks’ rules page for Laguna Coast says:
- No pets, with horses exempt.
- No e-bikes and no drones. The ban covers e-bike types 1 to 3.
- No fires and no alcohol. No swimming or wading in the creeks or lake.
- Stay on designated trails marked with trail posts.
- The park is subject to closure during rainy weather.
The park page adds that trails may close for three days or more after rain. OC Parks warns of mountain lions, rattlesnakes, poison oak and rugged terrain.
About Sweany Bench
OC Parks’ map does not label a Joseph R. Sweany Bench, and no OC Parks or Laguna Canyon Foundation page checked for this guide places one on Boat Road, so this page does not either. The map’s scenic overlook symbol beside Boat Road is the only viewpoint it marks on the trail.
Trails that join them
Laguna Ridge Trail runs from the ridge toward Laguna Canyon Road on the map. OC Parks rates it difficult at 1.25 miles, open to hikers and bikes without horses. Emerald Canyon Road and Bommer Ridge Trail, both moderate, are the longer routes through the same part of the park at 3 and 3.75 miles. The map prints no loop lengths, so build any loop from the individual trail lengths and allow for the climbs OC Parks marks as difficult.
Guided hikes
As of October 28, 2026, the Laguna Canyon Foundation lists hikes from the Nix Nature Center, Ridge Park, the Willow Staging Area and James Dilley Preserve, with RSVP. None is on Boat Road or Laguna Bowl. OC Parks says volunteer naturalists and park staff lead tours on foot and by bicycle. The Laguna Coast Wilderness Park guide and the hiking guide cover the entrances, and bird watching covers Barbara’s Lake.
