Numbers to keep

  • Emergency: 911.
  • Police non-emergency: (949) 497-0701, at the station at 505 Forest Avenue. The city says the department is on duty 24 hours a day.
  • Fire non-emergency: (949) 497-0700.
  • Fire Prevention Division: 949-497-0352.

To file a police report, the city said online reporting was not available when this page was checked and to call (949) 497-0701 ext. 2. For a mental health request that is not an emergency, see community resources.

Vacation house checks

The police department offers a vacation house check. To qualify, the city says the owner or tenant must plan to be away longer than four days but less than three weeks. You apply with the form on the city’s police pages.

Alarm permits

The city says you must have a permit if you have a burglary or robbery alarm system at a home or business in Laguna Beach. The city’s alarm program administrator, Alarm Program Systems, issues them online.

  1. Register through the Alarm Program website linked on the city’s alarm permit page.
  2. Pay the fee: $65 for a new system or $45 to renew. Each permit is valid for two years.
  3. If you need help registering, call the help desk at (888) 865-9770.

The city lists penalties for false alarms: $175 per false alarm for three false burglary alarms in 12 months with a permit, $350 per false alarm for more than six in 12 months with a permit, $175 for a false burglary alarm without a permit, and $265 for a false robbery alarm regardless of permit. Unpaid balances grow by 10 percent a month up to 100 percent.

Fingerprinting and Live Scan

Fingerprinting is by appointment only. The city lists a rolling fee of $45 for Live Scan or fingerprints. Make an appointment through the link on the city’s fingerprinting page, or call the Community Services Officer at (949) 497-0396.

Police reports and other requests

The city’s “How Do I” page for the police department links to these tasks: claiming property, getting a vehicle released, resolving a parking citation, getting a trespass letter, getting a copy of a police report and giving feedback. Copies of police reports cost $16, and the city says to request them at the department Monday to Thursday and every other Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For parking rules and citations, see parking.

Car seat checks

The department lists car seat inspections by appointment with certified instructors. The city says the visit is a one-on-one lesson, and it asks you to bring the car’s manual and the seat’s instructions, and to try installing the seat beforehand if you can.

Community programs

The department lists these programs on its community programs page:

  • Community Camera Program: the department asks residents and businesses to register privately owned cameras so that footage may help it respond to incidents.
  • Citizen Police Academy: a free, twelve-week course that meets Wednesday nights, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The city says it is open to people 18 or older who live or work in Laguna Beach, with no felony convictions, no pending civil or criminal cases with the city or its employees and no outstanding warrants. It covers topics such as department history, investigations and traffic enforcement, and includes a tour of the station and a hands-on look at equipment. You register through the city’s recreation class sign-up when a class is scheduled; as of October 2026 the city says the next session is anticipated in early 2027. The city says it is not meant to prepare you for a police job. Call (949) 715-0831 for information.
  • Police Explorer Post 1016: a program for ages 14 to 21.
  • Neighborhood Watch and Dog Walkers Watch: the department says it can set up a meeting with a neighborhood about these programs.
  • Citizen on Patrol: the city page said it was under construction when checked.

For city volunteer programs outside the police department, see volunteering.

Fire department services

The Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Division keeps a forms and handouts page with its inspection program documents, wildfire guides, special event standards and applications, and a 2025 handout on outdoor fireplaces, fire pits and BBQs. Read the handout before you use one.

  • Free Wildfire Consultation: staff come to your home and advise on preparing the structure and landscape. You request it by form.
  • AB-38 inspection: when you sell a home with one to four units in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, the department performs the defensible-space inspection and issues a Letter of Compliance once the property meets requirements. You request it by form.
  • Public education: the department says it provides materials on home fire prevention, evacuation planning and wildfire safety in multiple formats and languages.

Alerts, evacuation zones and brush clearance are in emergency alerts and wildfire.
