Get a library card

OC Public Libraries has three kinds of card:

  1. Library card. You must live in California and show valid ID. Apply on the online library card application. New online registrations expire in 30 days, and you renew in person at a library with valid ID. Applicants under 18 can register online, and a parent or guardian must show photo ID when picking up the card. Most card privileges expire every three years.
  2. eCard. Orange County residents can register online for immediate, free access to online resources. An eCard does not give you computer access and cannot check out physical items. Visit a branch to upgrade to a full card.
  3. Computer card. If you are not eligible for a library card, you can apply in person at a branch. It lasts one year and gives internet and printing access only.

OC Public Libraries is fine free, so overdue items do not accrue late fines.

Limits to know

OC Public Libraries sets checkout limits by type of borrower: 50 items for adults and children, 20 for homebound patrons and 2 for Books by Mail. A child’s card cannot check out Discover & Go passes or Chromebooks. If a card is lost, visit any library location with valid ID to replace it.

What the branch offers

The branch page lists these resources and services:

  • Borrow: a Library of Things with musical instruments, tech, toys and kitchen items, plus Wi-Fi hotspots for card holders and laptops and chargers to check out and use in the library. Hotspot availability varies.
  • Collections: a local history collection of books on Laguna Beach and the surrounding area, a Spanish-language collection and a special collection of board games and puzzles.
  • Computers and printing: public computer terminals, free Wi-Fi, cloud printing limited to 50 pages at 15 cents a page, and copies at 15 cents a page. Scanning to your own flash drive is free.
  • For children: AWE stations, which are computers loaded with educational activities and games for ages 2 to 14, in English and Spanish.
  • Space: a patio with outdoor seating.

The Friends of the Laguna Beach Library run a Book Shop at the same address, with its own hours on the Friends’ website.

Butterfly and Fairy Garden

The Friends also keep a Butterfly and Fairy Garden of about 1,800 square feet on the southeast side of the library. Their page describes drought-tolerant, pollinator-friendly plants, about 30 fairy houses and scenes, a theme that changes each month and “Fairy Mail,” letters from children that the fairies answer. Volunteers look after it.

Events and programs are on the branch calendar at ocpl.libcal.com/calendar/lagunabeach. The branch page also lists a book club; contact the branch for details. OC Public Libraries also offers digital collections through its main site, including Libby by OverDrive, Freegal, KanopyPlus and Blackstone Unlimited eAudiobooks.
